So I am new to the Wing-T. I have been coaching the doublewing for 5 years in youth ball. I am interested in learning the Wing-T and the Shotgun Wing-T. I would like to keep my numbering system in place ie, holes 2-4-6 to the right 1-3-5 to the left and each back has a number. Where is the best place for me to begin mastering the Wing-T?
Thanks, Josh

Coach Dierick, thank you for the plug! It's much appreciated. Get a hold a good playbook. I have a basic one on the main site. But you may want to see what other coaches are doing. You also may want to Creehan's books and the 5-book series by Coach Tubby Raymond on the Delware wing-t. Once you see where they are attacking, you may want to start naming it what you want. But one thing is for sure: study, study, study! Once you get a total grasp of this system, the sky will be your limit! Good luck, Metz

Coach, when you're watching film of other teams and looking at your talent level, you need to determine, when things are bad, what are you going to run? For us, it was down. So, the down series is the first one we teach. It basically goes like this ... Monday: Teach down series; and 2 3-step plays Tuesday: Review Down series; complete any other plays in the series we haven't finished; and 2 3-step plays Wednesday: Teach buck series; and 2 3-step plays Thursday: Review buck and belly (focus on buck series); complete 3-step game Friday: Teach lead series; review passes. Saturday: review offense; teach 1 auxillary play/trick play. That's our first week. We attempt at tweaking at post practice meetings. Good luck, Metz

The buck series is one where the FB dives in one direction and one of the HBs runs laterally opposite the FB dive. The down series is a TE side series where the FB will aim toward the off-tackle hole (different people have different ways to do this, though they remain essentially the same) and the HB will get inot an option relationship with the QB. The belly is similar to the down, but it's primary focus is to attack the weak side of the formation. Your 628 Sweep, I imagine is a 20 series play (the buck series) where the HB will get the ball and head towards the 8 hole. 600 is more than likely your formation. 600 - Formation 20 - Series 8 - hole However, that's an educated guess ... it all depends on what you coach calling system is. Good luck, Metz

Coach, The Delaware System is pretty much as perfect as you can get. Some people change the hole numbering to evens right odd left, but it is a complete system. If you can, get the books from "Tubby" Raymond. He explains his entire numbering system in his books. Another thing you can do is find a playbook and study the numbering system there ... If you e-mail me, I'll see if I have any old Delaware Playbooks. CoachMetz@CoachMetz.com is my e-mail.

The advice I was given by a coach that has ran the Wing T for 20 years was to put plays in a series at a time, not just grab a play here and a play there. I always start with the buck series: buck sweep, trap and boot pass.
