Coaches,
Just wondering...What are your blocking points vs. a traditional 4-3? What is the best scheme to get the MLB? TE's rule vs. a 7 tech.? Last year vs. a 3tech. and a 7 tech. we tried putting the C on MLB and having the TE go over the top, but the TE would engage the PSLB on path and the MLB would make the play because C could'nt get there.

TE - Rule is Down-Backer (never block defender in your gap). TE takes inside release and tries to get to MLB. If Sam crosses your face, block him. PSHB - Wall-off Sam LB. FB - If PST is uncovered, your aiming point is the tail of tackle. Find the hip of the down block (PST) and hug it ! If MLB scrapes hard, put your facemask in his backside armpit and under-cut him ! Coaching Point - TE can take 5 foot split and then take easiest release to MLB. TE cant take 2 foot split (or less) and try to make the 7 Tech a 5 Tech (then TE can block down on 5 Tech and PSG traps first to show outside TE down block.
Just my thoughts, Denny Dierick

Do you tell your C to try and wash the MLB past the hole? Last year it seemed like the TE would always be blocking the Sam and if he did get through to the MLB, then the PSHB couldn't get to the Sam? Also, do you ever run it vs. a head up 6 tech. on the TE (4-3)? If so, what is the coaching point for the TE?
One more question......If the MLB is scraping hard vs. down, what are you looking at running to slow him down? Thanks,

Coach, The MLB's hard scrape can be countered with a couple of things. Like JSanny said, you can use the 34/36 counter to do it. You can also use down option. On down option, we teach our FB to get tackled, but if he doesn't get tackled, then he should block a 2nd level defender (usually the MLB). At Lasalle, we had two plays that complimented each other, the down trap and down sweep. On down cutback, the FB followed his Down steps and then cut back towards the backside 6 hole. Basically turning it into trap. On down sweep, the FB carries through his fake by cutting back. If the MLB is reading the FB, then he would probably follow the FB as the HB takes the ball to the off-end hole. Good luck, Metz
