Interesting question! I'm a huge fan of the down sweep. It was good to us and we ran it well. Down was our go to play, and the down sweep gave us the compliment we needed. We didn't have to worry about pulling both guards. It was definitely our best sweep. Metz

After coaching Buck Sweep, Power Sweep, Jet Sweep and Rocket Sweep over the years I really prefer the Rocket. When executed correctly it is a thing of beauty. It gets on the Flank so quickly that there are only three blocks to success. Rocket is so formation friendly that we can run it to any type of flank. Motion causes defenses to cheat thereby setting up great complimentary plays off this action. The marriage of Rocket and Inside Veer has really allowed us to score more points, control the clock, out-rush and keep our defense well rested. Just my thoughts.

Eddie, Sorry I didn't answer the call...I was in the middle of class. I think that down and down sweep can be run very effectively at that age group, assuming you don't have that much in. I think 11-12 year olds can handle 2 series well. So, if the down/belly series is one of them, then you should be fine. Metz

Coach,
Can you explain down sweep to me. I am a 4th year wing t coach. I will be coaching 13 year olds this year, and we have looked into running the follow from the bucksweep. I saw Bellevue run it in some of their games from last season, and I cant remember the other team that I saw run it. WE have also gone to a nasty split for our TE and on the sweep series it worked very well for us.....not so great on the belly or down, but I think we just need to look at blocking it better. The down series is maybe my favorite, and I would love to know moere about the down sweep. 41 counter was one of our best plays last year. I am glad that I have finally come across a wing t board. Thanks Coach

Coach, The down sweep of an off-end sweep (like the bucksweep) off of down action. coachmetz.com/playbook.aspxthe line above will take you to the playbook section. In the articles section, there is an article on alternatives to the bucksweep article that will also explain it. I haven't experimented much with nasty split, but I will tell you, that you need that TE to block the DT on Down (and down sweep), so that could explain it. Thanks for visiting, I'm glad you like the site. Metz
